nTire rim inspection

Finding the finest defects – even on high gloss

AI anomaly inspection finds the finest defects on rims where simple inspections fail because of reflections. Several cameras and light from different directions make every defect visible – at incoming inspection and on the complete wheel, in a cycle time under 7 s.

How we inspect

One light is not enough

A high-gloss rim reflects everything: lamps, surroundings, the camera itself. A defect often shows only under a certain angle of light. That is why a light dome above the rim switches light from different directions one after the other, and several cameras take images under every type of light.

Diffuse light

Light from all sides takes the reflections off the rim. Color defects, inclusions and shade deviations become visible.

Dark field

Light at a flat angle makes scratches, chips and pores light up, while the smooth surface stays dark.

Directional light

Light from several directions, one after the other: dents, pressure marks and shape defects cast shadows.

AI anomaly inspection

The AI knows what a good rim looks like

  • Only real deviationsThe AI learns what a good rim looks like – with its design, spokes, holes and emblem – and reports only what deviates from it.
  • From above and at an angleCameras from above and at an angle see the face, the spoke flanks and the rim flange.
  • Before and after assemblyAt incoming inspection, before a tire is mounted, and again on the complete wheel.
  • Teach & GoNew rim types are taught in seconds to minutes, without programming.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Rim inspection

Why are high-gloss rims hard to inspect?

A high-gloss rim reflects lamps, surroundings and the camera. A defect often shows only under a certain angle of light. That is why we switch light from different directions one after the other – diffuse, dark field and directional light – and take images with several cameras under every type of light.

Which defects does rim inspection find?

The finest defects such as scratches, chips and pores, dents, pressure marks and shape defects, as well as color defects, inclusions and shade deviations. The AI anomaly inspection learns what a good rim looks like and reports only real deviations.

Where in production are rims inspected, and how long does it take?

At incoming inspection, before a tire is mounted, and on the complete wheel. All images and checks together take less than 7 s of cycle time.

Is image data transferred to a cloud?

No. The AI analysis runs directly at the line, and the data stays in your plant. Remote maintenance via the Wahtari Platform is possible, but only with your approval.
